Aluminum Boat Trailer Grounding Problems

aluminum boat trailer grounding problems

My trailer's all aluminum and it originally grounded them to the frame, and then had a ground from the tongue to the plug. i changed that when i was having electrical issues. not sure if that's what solved them, but it's definitely the best way. you definitely can't rely on a trailer grounding through the hitch either.. Next hook up the plugs weather it is a 4 or 5 prong. now get a fluke not the test light and measure continuity between the truck and the trailer. also check where you 4 or 5 prong ground wire hooks onto the trailer and make sure it has a good ground connection. my trailer has riveted aluminum pieces that become loose and lose ground.. Properly functioning trailer lights are a must for safety, so check your lights every time you use your trailer. some problems, such as a burned-out bulb or a bad trailer light ground wire, can be a snap to fix—others can be a real pain to diagnose and repair. follow the steps in our photo sequence to keep your trailer lights in tiptop condition..

Pervasive problems aboard boats are ground faults and short circuits. both can slowly but surely drain the batteries, even with every switch turned off. perhaps more important, these snafus can cause stray current corrosion, which can sink your boat by eroding away through-hull fittings, fasteners, rudders, shafts and drives..
